Gather and Stitch: A Bridal Wear Store Soaked in South Asian Culture - #HeritageInBusiness

As trends evolve, we can see that businesses and brands gather inspiration from cultures all across the globe. Gather and Stitch, founded by Sri Lankan fashion designer Helani Sarath-Kumara, beautifully embodies the blend of Eastern and Western styles. Helani draws inspiration from her South Asian roots to create modern bridal and red-carpet fashion that speaks to a global audience. We asked Helani about ways in which her South Asian roots influenced Gather and Stitch and this is what she had to say

What inspired you to start a business that represents attributes of your cultural identity?

My business is a reflection of who I am. I was born in the East and raised in the West. I feel like I always had a draw to both cultures and so both Gather and Stitch Couture and Beauty are a reflection of our cultural identity.

How has your South Asian heritage influenced your approach to bridal and red-carpet fashion?

Definitely the beadwork, sequins and shine. The designs are inspired by South Asian sarees and lehengas. I take how they are meant to be and gently bend the rules to reflect my view of western silhouettes and shapes and as a result, the reflection of today's blend of cultures that are so true to a lot of us.

Do you have clients who are not desi but want to add South Asian elements to their weddings? If yes, why do you reckon they typically do that?

It would be the two-piece outfits or the beadwork, but this is global now. Trends across the world are all being inspired by each other and it's a beautiful thing to watch.

What was the most memorable reaction you received from a client who resonated with the cultural elements in your designs?

My most popular reaction is how we created the Modern Kandyan shape and style. This has gone all around the world. That as a collective reaction has been amazing. My most memorable reaction wasn't to do with cultural elements but was when someone said my designs were on their bucket list. I couldn't believe that someone would think that about my designs!

What advice would you have for aspiring Desi Fashion Designers that are part of the diaspora and intend on creating a business that reflects their heritage while also appealing to a global market?

Do what your heart calls you to do and you will find the people that resonate with you.

Helani's ability to incorporate aspects of South Asian traditional wear with Western styles has allowed her to create clothing that resonates with individuals of various cultures, appealing to both Desi and non-Desi shoppers. It was a brilliant experience featuring Helani on our platform I strongly believe that she can serve as an inspiration for young fashion designers who wish to honour their cultural heritage while creating something fresh and globally relevant.
